Year 10 Work Experience

In Year 10 students are expected to take on a work experience placement for a week. Work experience placements serve multiple purposes, including experience of the world of work, employability skill development and experience to help guide future career decision-making.

The importance of experiencing the world of work, cannot be stressed enough as it will help students to develop and apply skills learnt during study programmes.

Key Elements of Work Experience:

  • Work experience introduced in an assembly in school.

  • Students complete the work experience application form.

  • One to one interviews carried out.

  • All students matched to placements.

  • Learning to work carries out health & safety checks on all placements.

  • Each student receives details of their placement from Learning to Work.

  • Parents/Carers will be issued a parental consent form to complete and return to the school before the placement can take place.

  • All students MUST telephone the organisation they have been placed with in the weeks leading up to the work experience. This is a chance for students to introduce themselves, confirm the placement and arrange pre placement interviews where necessary. Work experience takes place and students may receive a teacher visit or phone call from the school.

  • Debrief sessions will be run in school and students should write thank you letters to their employer.

Developing the life skills and attributes employers want...

All pupils at Garth Hill College have the opportunity to embark on an innovative life skills programme called ‘The Edge’.

The scheme is intended, over time, to develop and accredit the life skills and attributes that employers are telling us they need – leadership, organisation, initiative, resilience and communication.  This will give pupils a qualification, which runs alongside their academic successes and recognises what they can do as well as what they know.

Unifrog is an online resource that helps students find their future by bringing all the available information into one single, impartial, user-friendly platform that helps students to make the best choices, and submit the strongest applications.
